Microdermabrasion is a device with diamond or sapphire heads used to treat the skin with micro-crystals for deep exfoliation. This treatment can provide fast, deep exfoliation with minimal discomfort and downtime.
The treatment works for most skin types and is used to correct imperfections such as superficial wrinkles, discolorations, scars, acne, blackheads, as well as address dry rough skin texture due to exposure to the environment. A treatment with microdermabrasion also removes the tough outer surface layer of the skin, which allow skin products to have improved penetration and leading to better results.
Depending on the the patient’s skin type and severity of concerns, microdermabrasion is typically done in several sessions conducted weekly, in between sessions the regeneration of the epidermis occurs. Mild treatments, such as a facial rejuvenation, takes about 5 sessions, while scar removal can take more than 10 sessions.
At the end of each session, soothing creams or masks are applied to accelerate the regenerative process. For ongoing maintenance, it is recommended that the treatments be repeated every 2-3 months.
Results and benefits
Results are achieved after just one treatment, but the degree of the results are based on the severity of the skin issues being addressed. The best results are typically seen after 5 or more sessions, and the results continue to improve over time as they are cumulative.
The course of treatment does not cause serious side effects and there is little to no downtime.
- dead skin cells are removed and new skin cells are exposed
- circulation of the skin is stimulated which improves thedelivery of oxygen and nutrients
- fine lines, small scars, wrinkles are reduced and smooth skin surface remains
- stretch marks are reduced
- the overall skin tone and texture is balanced.
However, microdermabrasion is contraindicated in patients with diabetes mellitus, unhealed burns, dermatosis, and herpes.
The experienced aestheticians performing procedures first thoroughly cleanse the skin and apply a moisturizer or oil to facilitate movement of the device over the skin surface which removes the top layer of the epithelium (the dead skin cells).
After the procedure, direct contact with the sun should be avoided.
At our PURE medical aesthetics clinic, microdermabrasion sessions are also used as complementary procedures to facial treatments and other services. This treatment is often used with the “vampire facial” – Aquagold microneedling with PRP.
